CANCELLATION POLICY

Unfortunately, MHNC is not immune from the current economic challenges. Therefore, we find it necessary to adhere fully to the following policy: MHNC staff reserves the right to cancel a program if minimum enrollment has not been met by the registration deadline. We ask you to preregister for programs because of the need to purchase supplies in advance. If we need to cancel a program, your payment will be refunded in full. If you need to cancel, please notify us at least 48 hours before the class. If we are able to fill your spot, you will be refunded in full; if not, we will refund 50% of your fee. If you cancel less than 48 hours before the class, your entire registration fee will be forfeited. Please help us ensure the success of our programs by registering and paying before the deadline. Thank you for your understanding.

 

Holiday Make It & Take It

You won’t want your kids to miss this one! They’ll make 8 unique gifts for $12, wrap them up and your children’s holiday shopping is done. Register before November 20, we fill up every year! (Most appropriate for K – 5th graders.)

 
Discovering New Worlds – Can there be Life out There? (IYA)
Sunday, Dec. 6, 1:30 – 3:00 PM

Are we boldly going where no one has gone before? Yes, with our telescopes. We know there are planets in other star systems, but can they support life as we know it? Do they have what it takes? Scientists are finding the answers. Join us as we enter the habitable zone.

Cost $5/adults, $3.50/students, seniors, FOMH, $12/families

Leave No Family Inside: Hark, Who Goes There?
Saturday, December 12, 12:30 – 3:00 PM

You’ll become an official animal private investigator by learning how to identify animal tracks, scat (animal droppings), and other clues left by local wildlife. Make and take a special plaster cast of an animal track as your badge of honor and expertise.

Cost: $6/person, $10/family
Registration and payment due December 9.

 

Christmas Bird Count
Friday, December 18, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Take a break from the holiday hustle and join nature center staff and volunteers for a day in the field counting birds. We’ll break for a potluck lunch, always featuring warm soups and yummy desserts. Call ahead if you would like to take part.

Cost: No charge

 

Snowshoe Trails Open and Rentals Available
Through February (when conditions permit)
Saturdays & Sundays, 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM

Please call ahead to check on snow conditions and availability of rentals during the week. Families with young children: try out our smaller shoes for age four and older, or bring a sled to pull your toddlers.

Snowshoe Rental: $3/adults, $2/students & seniors; FOMH: no charge

Leave No Family Inside: Hunting for Hoots
Saturday, January 9, 6:00-8:00 PM

Listening to the hooting of owls has to be one of life’s most special pleasures. Learning more about Wisconsin’s owls gives those hoot calls even more meaning. Join naturalist Jessica Miller as she takes you on a journey in search of these elusive nocturnal wonders. An indoor program on owl biology (with possible live owls) will be followed by an outdoor hunt for owl hoots.

Cost: $6/individual or $10/family

Snowshoe Lacing Workshop
Saturday & Sunday, January 16 & 17, 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Naturalist Steve Petznick will lead you through the steps to lace your own 10” x 56” Alaskan-style snowshoes. All materials are provided, including easy to use rubber bindings. The white ash frames are pre-bent, drilled, varnished and ready for lacing. Makes a great holiday gift.

Cost: $175/adults or $165/FOMH members

Winter Family Fun Day & Mosquito Hill Snowshoe Races
Saturday, January 30, 12 noon - 3:00 PM (Races begin at 9:45 AM)

Candlelight Snowshoe Walk
Saturdays, January 23 & February 6, 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Enjoy this self-led excursion through the nature center’s lowland forest. Refreshments will be served and all snowshoe equipment is provided. A $2 discount is available to participants who bring their own snowshoes.

Cost: $8/adults, $5/students, seniors/FOMH or $25/family

Evening for Sweethearts
Saturday, February 13, 7:00 - 10:00 PM

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart and be treated to a reception with beverages, hors d’oeuvres and soft music. Enjoy a quiet snowshoe walk and campfire. Take home a small gift as a memento.

Cost: $40/couple
Reservations and payment due February 6.

 

Winter Camping
Saturday & Sunday, February 20 & 21

Why not get out and enjoy the winter season by partaking in this annual overnight event. Your registration fee includes 4 incredible meals (this isn't your typical standard fare), fun cold-weather activities, outdoor skills sessions, camaraderie with other outdoor enthusiasts and a special appearance and presentation by local celebrity, Lance Fox, who climbed Mt. Everest in 2009. 

Cost: $50/adult, $40/members, seniors and students 14-17. Become a tent captain by registering three other people with you and your fee, as a tent captain, is $35.

Leave No Family Inside: Snowshoeing for Families
Sunday, February 21, 12:30-3:00 PM

What a better way to get out and enjoy our Wisconsin winters than to experience it on snowshoes. Join naturalist Jessica Miller as she guides you through the process of learning how to snowshoe (it’s so easy!). A guided hike around the nature center property will give you some practice with the new footgear and a chance to learn about our winter world.

Cost: $6/individual or $10/family
Registration and payment due February 16.

 

Globe at Night
Friday, February 26, 6:30-8:30 PM

If you like starry nights, plan to attend this free training session for people interested in a citizen-based monitoring project of the night sky called Globe at Night. This nation-wide effort takes place from March 15-27 and seeks to monitor and map light pollution sources. Information will be provided on how an individual’s choices can reduce light pollution.

Pruning Shade Trees: Beyond the Basics (NEW! LONGER SESSION)
Saturday, February 27, 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM

This popular class has been extended to allow for more hands-on experience. Naturalist Steve Petznick will present an indoors portion which includes numerous handouts.  After a bag lunch that you provide, a large portion of the afternoon will be devoted to outside practice of what was learned indoors.  Bring clear photographs with leaves off from several angles of your problem trees for some advice. Class size is limited.

Willow Basketry
Saturday, February 27, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Create your own rustic, rib-style basket in this class taught by Faith Schlaeppi, a New London area landscape gardener and accomplished basket maker. Locally collected willow will be used to create an attractive and functional basket. Start by splitting and stripping branches. The remainder of the day will be spent weaving and putting on the finishing touches.

Cost: $39/person or $34/members

Leopold Bench Building Workshop
Saturday, March 6, 9:00 – 11:00 AM

These comfortable rustic wood benches were designed and made popular by noted Wisconsin conservationist Aldo Leopold. You can build your own to grace a patio or garden during this workshop with naturalist Mike Hibbard. All you’ll need to complete your project are some hand tools.

Cost: $50/person, $45/students, seniors, FOMH.

Leave No Family Inside: Shrews and Mice and Moles…Oh My!
Sunday, March 14, 12:30-3:00 PM

When most people think about resident mammals in Northeast Wisconsin, I bet few think of mice, shrews, moles and voles. In fact, small mammals significantly outnumber large mammals such as deer, coyotes and raccoons but are much more elusive. Join naturalist Jessica Miller and DNR Wildlife Biologist, Loren Ayers, as they introduce you to the world of small rodents. We’ll learn how to identify, live trap and handle these special critters as well as learn some cool facts about how they remain active all year long.

Landscaping with Natives
Saturday, March 13, 1:00 – 2:30 PM

Help change the world by planting native vegetation instead of buying exotics from the nurseries and discount stores. Donna VanBueken, Executive Director of Wild Ones, is a leading advocate of going green in the Fox Valley area for several decades. Her experience and suggestions will help you change your landscape forever.

Build Your Own Rain Barrel
Saturday, March 20, 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Turn a plastic 55-gallon drum into a useful tool for catching rainwater and preventing storm water runoff problems. All materials and instructions will be provided. Participants will receive a list of simple tools to bring to class upon registration.

Crane Count Planning Meeting
Saturday, March 20, 1:00 – 2:00 PM

All persons interested in taking part in the Annual Sandhill Crane Count on Saturday, April 17 are encouraged to attend this orientation session. Sign up for sites in both Outagamie and Waupaca Counties will be held during this meeting.

Musky Magic
Sunday, March 21, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

If you love musky fishing, you’ll love this show with our featured speaker Lee Tauchen, fishing guide and lure manufacturer from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. More than 30 vendors, poolside demonstrations, door prizes and food and beverage sales will round out this event held at the New London Middle School.

Tickets: $8/adults, $6/students 14 and under, for sale at the door.

 

Bird-scaping Your Yard
Saturday, March 27, 1:00 – 2:30 PM

Part of the Going Green in 2010 series, naturalist and avid birder Steve Petznick provides a different perspective to the urban landscapes. From a bird’s eye view, he will have you thinking a whole new way about your yard and provide many ideas to increase the “curb appeal” for your feathered friends.
