Leave No Family Inside: Hark, Who Goes There?

You’ll become an official animal
private investigator by learning how to identify animal tracks, scat
(animal droppings), and other clues left by local wildlife. Make and
take a special plaster cast of an animal track as your badge of honor
and expertise.
Cost: $6/person, $10/family

Candlelight
Snowshoe Walk
Saturdays, January 23 & February 6, 6:30 - 9:00 PM
Enjoy this
self-led excursion through the nature center’s lowland forest.
Refreshments will be served and all snowshoe equipment is provided.
A $2 discount is available to participants who bring their own
snowshoes.

Sweethearts

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with your
sweetheart and be treated to a reception with beverages, hors
d’oeuvres and soft music. Enjoy a quiet snowshoe walk and campfire.

Winter Camping
Saturday & Sunday, February 20
& 21
Why not get
out and enjoy the winter season by partaking in this annual
overnight event. Your registration fee includes 4 incredible meals
(this isn't your typical standard fare), fun cold-weather
activities, outdoor skills sessions, camaraderie with other outdoor
enthusiasts and a special appearance and presentation by local
celebrity, Lance Fox, who
climbed Mt. Everest in 2009.
Cost:
$50/adult, $40/members, seniors and students 14-17. Become a tent
captain by registering three other people with you and your fee, as
a tent captain, is $35.

Leave No Family Inside: Snowshoeing
for Families
Sunday, February 21,
12:30-3:00 PM
What a better way to get out and
enjoy our Wisconsin winters than to experience it on snowshoes. Join
naturalist Jessica Miller as she guides you through the process of
learning how to snowshoe (it’s so easy!). A guided hike around the
nature center property will give you some practice with the new
footgear and a chance to learn about our winter world.
Cost: $6/individual or $10/family

Globe at Night
Friday,

If you like starry nights, plan
to attend this free training session for people interested in a
citizen-based monitoring project of the night sky called Globe at
Night. This nation-wide effort takes place from March 15-27 and
seeks to monitor and map light pollution sources. Information will
be provided on how an individual’s choices can reduce light
pollution.

Pruning
Shade Trees: Beyond the Basics (NEW! LONGER SESSION)
Saturday, February 27, 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM
This popular class has been
extended to allow for more hands-on experience. Naturalist Steve
Petznick will present an indoors portion which includes numerous
handouts. After a bag lunch that you provide, a large portion of
the afternoon will be devoted to outside practice of what was
learned indoors. Bring clear photographs with leaves off from
several angles of your problem trees for some advice. Class size is
limited.

Willow Basketry
Saturday, February 27, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Create your
own rustic, rib-style basket in this class taught by Faith
Schlaeppi, a New London area landscape gardener and accomplished
basket maker. Locally collected willow will be used to create an
attractive and functional basket. Start by splitting and stripping
branches. The remainder of the day will be spent weaving and putting
on the finishing touches.

Leopold Bench Building Workshop
Saturday, March 6, 9:00 – 11:00 AM
These comfortable rustic wood
benches were designed and made popular by noted Wisconsin
conservationist Aldo Leopold. You can build your own to grace a
patio or garden during this workshop with naturalist Mike Hibbard.
All you’ll need to complete your project are some hand tools.

Leave No Family Inside: Shrews and Mice and Moles…Oh
My!

When most people think about
resident mammals in Northeast Wisconsin, I bet few think of mice,
shrews, moles and voles. In fact, small mammals significantly
outnumber large mammals such as deer, coyotes and raccoons but are
much more elusive. Join naturalist Jessica Miller and DNR Wildlife
Biologist, Loren Ayers, as they introduce
you to the world of small rodents. We’ll learn how to identify, live
trap and handle these special critters as well as learn some cool
facts about how they remain active all year long.

Landscaping with Natives

Build Your Own Rain Barrel
Saturday, March 20, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Turn a plastic 55-gallon drum into
a useful tool for catching rainwater and preventing storm water
runoff problems. All materials and instructions will be provided.

upon registration.

Crane Count Planning Meeting

part in the Annual Sandhill Crane Count on Saturday, April 17 are

meeting.

If you love musky fishing, you’ll
love this show with our featured speaker Lee Tauchen, fishing guide
and lure manufacturer from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. More than 30
vendors, poolside demonstrations, door prizes and food and beverage
sales will round out this event held at the New London Middle
School.

Bird-scaping Your Yard
